Thomas Ewing Sr. then moved to Lancaster, Ohio, where he studied law under Philemon Beecher and was admitted to the Ohio Bar at age 26 in Ewing married Beecher's niece and Philemon became a key Ewing family member, as you will see. Beecher was elected to Congress in for this first term and Ewing took over his practice.

The collection consists of diaries, memoirs, correspondence, speeches, writings, notebooks, scrapbooks, and miscellaneous material. Except for a small Addition series, the entire collection was microfilmed in the order of its arrangement in The Blaine Family Papers . Born in Lancaster, Ohio, into Ohio's privileged Ewing family, his father was Thomas Ewing, who served as a United States Senator and Cabinet member of several presidential administrations. His brothers were future Union generals Hugh Boyle Ewing, and Charles Ewing, and his foster brother (and later brother-in-law) was William T. Sherman.
